Movie Review : Lootera

1)  Extremely well made movie, one can sense the pains director and his team took to maintain the look and feel of the movie.

2) It was filled with excitement 'built-up-scenes' but they never resulted in an explosion or ‘release’, rather after hitting the peak, instead of blast, taking it to another level, director decided to take couple steps backward, e.g. when father-daughter find out Nandu’s reality, instead of explosion there was ‘intermission', making one feel cheated , or when  Nandu ends up at Pakhi’s guest house, they still mumble jumble about murders and stuff so casually, that killed the whole momentum built by prior chase-scene.

3) Low on entertainment quotient. 

4) I think they should have added captions to certain scenes, you may call it force-feed the viewers but still I think adding captions in opening scene like 1955 Manekpur, Bengal , or in scene after interval like 1958 Dalhousie, HP. That would have helped viewer to absorb the settings better.

5) Lyrics/Music/Vocals were absolutely stunning, and background music was brilliant, it was so minimal and effective.

6) Dialogues – Very nicely done, no over-top-bhaari-bharkam dialogue baazi, and better were the pauses between the words, in fact pauses were much more powerful and added meaning to words.

7) Acting wise – I think both lead actors missed something; they simply couldn’t leave their modern-chic mannerism, which was a letdown. They were good in patches but overall average; they lacked the conviction of love-tales of 50s/60s. Supporting cast was minimal, Vikram Massey was good, Sonakshi’s best friend had just one scene, but Zameendaar sahab was fabulous.

Overall, a solid 3 star movie.

Movie Review - Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

It's been really ages since I really did any movie review kind of post, or any kind of post.
So, last one was 'Delhi Belly' and there is a link between them, and people who know me, know that too.

So let’s start in classical bullet points, primarily to keep things in track -

1) Didn't like the title when I first heard of it, and don't like it now either.

2) Ayan Mujkherji, this guy really impressed me with his restrained direction in his debut movie, it was brilliant.

3) Ik taraa - Tochi Rana version, became one my favorite, so was expecting another that kind of song.

4) Add 'thinking' star Ranbir to the above mix, skyrockted my expectations.

5) Now coming to the movie, it started on a bad note, seriously what the hell Madhuri was doing there? Whole song/sequence looked so forced and out of place. After movie ended, no one, really no one remembered Madhuri or song or music or dance for even 1 second. It seemed like some afterthought from producer, chal movie ban gayi, ab surprise element daaltey hai....Madhuri ka item number, just like Ash's Kajra re caught everyone by surprise & became a rage, but whole idea fell flat.

6) Introductions scenes were so repetitive and clichéd, characters were introduced in same old way, that cool friend with sharp tongue and a headphone, studious one with chashma, and of course cool and happening , life of every party one in the opening song-sequence. No comments about Aditya Roy K.

7) Whole ‘hiking’ trip picturization was so FAKE and irritating. Right from buying train tickets, boarding train, all of them carrying EXACT same kind of bag pack (just in different color), meeting plasticiky girls in compartment, playing those games, blah blah blah, highly irritating.

8) Now actual hiking shots, what were they thinking while shooting those? Anyone who has done an even half-a-mile hiking will know how one looks like after it, but here everyone ( including instructor) looked so fresh and crisp, no sign of sweat, or tiredness, or feeling/looking thirsty, dirty clothes/shoes, but NO everything was so perfect. And then there were those idiot/timewasting/highly irritating scenes between Bunny and LARA while hiking.

9) And the LOWEST point of the movie was when instructor talks about some ‘Bhagsu Point or something, and then gives crap about ‘Puranmasi ki raat “, mannat and all.  This is 2013, not 1997 when Madhuri explained Valentine’s day with puranmasi reference in DTPH.

10) In one shot it was all snow and in very next shot it’s ‘Balam Pichkari’ song, it is possible but looks highly unconvincing on screen. It was more of music video which they decided to plug in.

11) Fighting with local goons was pathetically conceived and acted. Everything was BAD in that sequence. Acting, writing, direction, location/set it was BAD BAD BAD.

12) Characters were not established at all, there was a brief reference to Deepika’s family but later on nothing, Aditya Roy Kapur was the weakest link, he needs acting classes and less whiskey glasses. He tried to present as charming goofy kind of guy but only succeeded in irritating. He talks about his father but it never seemed convincing.

13) The transition between 8 before and 8 years after was very blurry, there was hardly a difference. They all looked same, behaved same. They should have invested little bit in showing their after-8 yrs life, may be a shot or two of Deepika as doctor running her clinic.

14) Casting of Kalki as Aditi was the master stroke, if one looks from distance there is nothing new to her character but casting a blonde hair girl with unusual(in good sense) looks added a lot of dimension to her role, plus she really acted her part extremely well.

15) Another high point of movie was Farooque Sheikh, he really brought warmth and believability, his scenes kind-of had touches of Ayan’s Wake Up Sid. Though I still feel Tanvi Azmi was wasted in that minuscule role.

16) Another guy who must be ashamed of his decision of doing this will be Rana Duggubatii, what was he thinking when he agreed for that role? May be a chance of getting a better/bigger deal from Dharma Productions in future.

17) Now let’s talk about Ranbir Kapoor, as expected he really acted well in this movie too, and undoubtedly he is meant for bigger success in future. In this movie, I noticed that he too is about to fall into trap-of-being-a-superstar, that is when RANBIR KAPOOR becomes bigger than the character he is playing, exactly same way SRK is. In this whole movie, it was a RANBIR KAPOOR show, almost in all scenes he was there, almost ALL, just like SRK used to be in Karan Johar/ YRF movies. Like I said earlier I didn’t like the title of movie, they could have called it ‘A Ranbir Kapoor Show’.

18) Music – I liked it, though lot of songs were amalgam of Pritam’s prior work which he packaged in a very Dharma Productions kind of boundaries, and in couple of songs he tried to create ‘Ik Taraa’ magic like song in ‘Kabiraa’, or tried to cash-in Mohit Chauhan’s Rockstar success. Overall , pretty decent lively peppy MUZIIIIIK. 

19) Overall, I saw some flashes of Ayan's talent, but this time seems like Producer had a bigger say in the shaping of the movie.

Aahaa..so this is again that time of year…when everyone gets busy making resolutions, and then end up breaking them within next 2 weeks, and when gym memberships hit the sky, and sidewalks are suddenly crowded with huffing and puffing ‘over nightly turned fitness conscious converts’.

And here, I’m, neither making resolutions nor hitting gym…(insert evil grin here).

'Rann is a bad film. Period'

So finally fall has fallen in bay area….and it’s raining ‘beautifully’, normally it drizzles and drizzles for days but that’s no fun.
Today it is actually ‘Raining’ …raining like good size drops falling with some rhythm and intensity.
It is something which I’m sure always touches everyone not just physically…sometimes it makes one sad and sometimes happy and most of the time ‘in-between’ …. that funny feeling when you know something is amiss but you can’t put finger on that.
For the record, I’m HAPPY.

Last night saw two back-to-back movies of ‘Supriya Pathak’.

First one was ‘Wake Up Sid’, it was a crazy idea to go for a movie on a Monday evening, oddly one of American multiplex was running the shows of Wake Up Sid which is quite an unusual thing. So we went there, and whole complex was deserted…there were no digital board flashing show timings and all, just 3-4 kids were manning the tickets and snacks booths.

After purchasing the tickets we went to search for audi # 9 which was (obviously) in the farthest corner of the complex, and let me again emphasis on the ‘deserted’ part, all passages/foyer everything was devoid of a single soul, and of course our audi was EMPTY. It was just 4 of us there.
Whole setting was straight out from horror movies; where protagonists stop at some motel at some deserted place and turn on the TV in their rooms only to see themselves on screen.


Movie worked for me, though in promos, character of Ranbir looked like a hybrid of Lakshay’s Hrithik and DCH’s Aamir and music sounded like re-cycled tunes/lyrics of Rock On/Luck By Chance, and ‘iktara’ a left over of Aamir/DevD.

Whole casting worked for me, Ranbir fitted the role to the T, and he didn’t require any special effort to get that dork look, and Konkana was her usual self though I hated her kurtas, I mean the colors. Now it’s tough to imagine anyone else portraying Sid n Aisha’s role.
Movie had all elements of a regular masala movie..like childhood friend se ladai and patch up; father-son confrontations; realization of mother’s ‘taken-for-granted’ love; not realizing that ‘it-is-love-till-the-last-reel’; Emotional quadrangle between ‘Ranbir-New(irritating)Girl-Konkana-Rahul (copying his younger brother)’ but treatment of all these was good…simple straightforward no melodrama!

Late night, I saw ‘Bazaar’ for the first time in one straight sitting and totally blown away with the performances/dialogues/direction and of course music. It’s just plain impossible to write about Smita Patil/Naseeruddin Shah/Faroque Sheikh/Supriya Pathak and other characters. A must watch for everyone.

Kaminey –Aaj Kal

Kaminey - catchy title, tantalizing music, brilliant lyrics, teamed with teasing trailers.

Love Aaj Kal – bad title, remixed music, inaudible singer's voices, indecipherable lyrics.

Kaminey – had Vishal written all over it in a good way, dialogues, background score, screenplay etc etc.

Love Aaj Kal - had Saif smudged on it, of course forcefully, it was like watching Saif –Aaj Kal, and he was everywhere, in every scene, even in voice-over. Typical ‘I’m-the-Producer-I’ll-mouth-the-best-lines’ attitude.

Kaminey – without doubt is best movie of the year so far (or till Ishqiya releases), it was crisp, with zero time-waste, every scene was neatly done, but it all went bad in that ‘Free-for-all’ shooting fiasco towards the end.

And of course, one can’t stop comparing this with his earlier master pieces, Maqbool (I call it ‘complete’ movie), Omkara, Blue Umbrella; Here I guess, he tried to pack too much in too little time, may be that was the whole point of the movie, trying to pack everything, and relating all small details seamlessly, and he succeeded on doing that.

Like as I said earlier, it was all good, but that ‘free-for-all’ shooting scene spoiled it for me, and since everything was happening so fast that one starts to alienate from it instead of getting sucked in. It simple didn’t give time to ‘feel’ for characters, like in Maqbool’s Maqbool, Nimmi - one can feel their angst and helplessness, like in Omkara even after watching it ‘n’ times one prays for a different ending. Like in Blue Umbrella, Biniya’s glee makes one happy, and Nand Kishore’s plight after social boycott was moving.

Here, romance between Guddu n Sweety was unconvincing, I don’t know what those ‘Bengali Brothers’ were doing in this movie, Tashi was unconvincing, he was introduced in a fantastic way in that boat scene, but after that whole character took a nose-dive. Lele-Lobo were good but again can’t help comparing them with brilliant cops duo of Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah of Maqbool. Bhope was really good, very fluid, very menacing, neatly done by Amol Gupte (earlier I used to think of him some old guy who ghost-directed Taare Zameen Par’)

Another thing, don’t know what’s the hype about Shahid’s work here; he was overshadowed by Priyanka in all their scenes, or by Amol Gupte or Mikhail or White horses or ‘Dhan ta nan’!

In one line, it is a good movie but not a great one by any stretch of imagination.

Pheww, forgot to write about LAK, hmmm..not now, some other time!!

As expected it turned out to be best match in recent history. But unexpectedly climax script went wrong for die-hard Federer fans like me; He was supposed to win the title though not easily but in not more than 4 sets.

He was little scratchy in first 3 games of first set, in second set for first 6 games he was back in rhythm but in 7^th game some ‘noisy audience’ disturbed his concentration and he handed a easy volley into net and also ended up losing that game and next 3 games to lose the set.

It was hard to choose a winner in 3^rd set, and in 4^th set again his first serve started to trouble him and at the same time rescued him in 4^th set tie-break (also Nadal’s double fault at 5-2 helped), and in final set his first serve TOTALLY deserted him, he also looked little tired n jaded after splitting 12 games, and ended up losing.

In my opinion, he played at least 1 gear below his potential, whereas Nadal is in form of his life and played exceptional tennis.

In all, it turned out to be heartbreaking especially after his French open beating; here he was expected to win, and in spite of not being in his best form he still took it to last set and lost from there.

And on the same day, India lost another final, this time to SL, and again same story; from past so many years either Jayasuriya or Murli or Vaas do something special and this time along with Jayasuriya this Mendis fellow destroyed them.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, turned out to be routine college-romance kind of GOOD movie, with a very very silly ending, though people say there can’t be better end. Huh.

Names in it are really bad or dumb e.g. Rats/Meow/Bombs…..very irritating, and also who calls their parents peachy or pumpkin??

Songs are misplaced, but they are good enough to make you sit through out.

Saawariya

1) First thing first, I don't know why they named it 'Saawariya', just coz' Rani called the hero by this name.....or may be they wrote lyrics before deciding the name.
They should've called it something else...like 'Sapnon ka Shaher' or '3 raat ka intezaar', or "Iss Shaher mein Subah nahi"..... Or 'Gray'...or 'Blue'.

2) Heroine (Sounds weird no? :-)) -- Add lots of Sonali Bendre + a bit of Soha Ali + small traces of Suchitra Krishnamurthy = Sonam Kapoor......looks Jhaakas when filmed at certain angles ;-)

3) Hero -- Add younger version of Sanjay Dutt(of Rocky/Naam etc) + a bit of Sonu Nigam + lots of Neetu Singh (minus Rishi Kapoor if any) = Ranbir Kapoor.

4) Yes, though right at the begining SLB warns that it is based in a 'Khwwabon ka Shaher' that shaher looked much weird even by standards of dreams.

5) After HDDCS and Devdas, I thought SLB have some side-business of 'Curtains/Painted-glasses/fancy light-works (with specialization in Chandeliers), and after this movie seems that he has added 'Carpets' to his repertoire.

6) Don't know whether SLB was launching new actors or he was more interested in launching a new music director, damn, there were more songs than dialogues. I really felt bad for new actors; they were not bad but also not noticeable either.

7) Songs never contributed in narration, were out of sync with whole setting, and choreography in that 'Eid' song was so funny , dunno if that was intentional.

All songs sounded like they're sung with only 'back-ground' music, except 'Maasha-Allah' one.

8) And Sallu miyan was total miscast, is he turning into Pedophile or something? I guess someone like Sanjay Suri would have looked more creditable.

9) I'm still undecided, was that a drama/romance/comedy or nothing. I felt as if I've watched a musical play, played in some unbelievable sets.

10) Err, thats sums up my review, and about story I don't know if there was any, to me it would have suited more as TV show, something on lines of 'Darpan'/'Katha-Saagar'/'Chekov-Ki-Amar-Kahaniya' or more recent ones 'Gubbare' or 'Star Best Seller types'. All done under 1 hour.

Well, with all said, nothing wrong in making such movie, but now this will only help in making other pathetic movie by pathetic director a big hit.

When I was a kid, in our 'block' there used to be two cricket teams, one kinda 16+ and other one of say 12+ olds, whenever 'senior' team were short of guys they used to include some of us under- 12 boys to make count 11, though most of the time they used to place us at thirdman for fetching the balls from boundary :-( , but whoever got selected used to feel proud :-) .....

Exactly same scene is with Indian team, bande poore nahi ho rahe...so selectors decided to include Ganguly :-)
After all, atleast on papers his name looks better than 'Kaifs/Rainas/Mongias and Raos' :-)

4) Baabul -- Director should be hanged/shot/buried/burnt and ashes should be dumped in 200 feet pit.
5) Darna Zaroori Hai -- RGV, someone please drag him out of his office and show him there is more to life than his make-believe underworld.

Total masala, total yaari-dosti type movie, SRK recommending Priyanka, Arjun of his Temptation troupe..and Farhan giving work to his friends..

Music was on weaker side, Shankar Mahdevan's voice was medicore in 'Ganpati' song, someone with heavy voice like Rathod or Amit Kumar would have done a better job!!

And I'm 200% sure nobody can write a complete review or more than 10 lines about storyline!
All I can remember is that it started with Chunky and ended with Isha, with lots of useless characters like Kareena/Rampal/Om Puri and equally useless songs thrown in.
Almost all songs were picturized as stage shows; Kareena's number was worst and SRK 'Paan' song was best choreographed.

Only saving grace was the background music, coz that was remix of older version.

After KANK, and now Don, I'm convinced that SRK is no longer an actor, he is simply SRK in his movies not the character, but just larger-than-life SRK himself.
Its time he and his director-friends realize that and stop him from heading towards Dada's fate.

In all, a gamble that didn't pay off; still a risk-worth taking, a failed experiment by Farhan, anyways every time he cannot deliver a DCH or Lakshaya, but still he managed to remain in the elite league. From a 'male-bonding story' to a 'love-story in war-background', and to a 'classic-remake', now lets wait what he comes up with next!

Oh man !!!!! it was a long ordeal of close to 4 hours, and we were sitting on the seat number 1 and 2 of row number 1, that means just inches away from the screen B-(
From that distance initially it was hard to distinguish Rani from Kiron Kher but eventually eyes adjusted with a lot of help from Rani's scratchy voice.

'KANK' confirms one's belief that media in all forms(tv/radio/print/internet etc etc) is biased (read sold); and dances to the tunes of green color papers! (or cloth)

KANK is a 70 crore product of a rich stubborn KJo's whims, who is obsessed with SRK. Almost all scenes have SRK, and in almost every second scene somebody is crying.
SRK looks like old Veer Prataap Singh of Veer-Zaara who has just come out of his imprisonment, and is big time predictable.
Rani specializes in one-eye weeping, I wonder how she does that.

KANK is more like a TV serial, typical K types one, long, boring, and irritating, at times disgusting, specially that bed-store scene.

The whole concept was so unconvincing, it was hard to identify with any of those relationships.
SRK is whiny, Rani is weepy without a cause, damn in whole movie she is soooooo sad,
Right from the first scene Rani is sad, before marriage she is sad, after 4 years of marriage she is sad, and till the last scene she is sad ; even though draws no sympathy !!
Only God or KJo knows what was her problem or what was she seeking? And why the hell SRK falls for her??
AB and Kiron Kher are predictable and wasted, only saving grace was presence of Preity and Abhishek, both I feel gave one of the best performances of their career.

Well, KJo's movies are like defn of 'friction'(i.e necessary evil) B-(, you hate it or love it, but you gotta see it. But after this I'm sure I'm not gonna see his or his sidekick's next one.
I'm bored of watching same scantly clad models, same exotic locations, same designer sarees with minimal cholis, same SRK same expressions, same rich and loud punjabi family backdrop.

And neither his lucky mascot Kajol's nor even his own presence can save him from loads of criticism. He should better leave such subjects for Yash uncle only.

Who Shakespeare, what Othello...its all about Vishal's vision.

At last, got to see Omkara, though we were returned back by 'Omkara sold out' sign on Tuesday, but not this Sunday.

hmm something was missing but something was captivating, and on second thoughts it was lil more on captivating side.
Some of the scenes were sheer genius, one title-song in background of a fight sequence and obviously the last scene. Those were enough to set Vishal miles apart from other directors.

Anyone who has seen UP villages, village houses, and marriage ceremonies can instantly recognize the depth of research done by Vishal n his team.

Time to time he has come up with timeless melodies like in Satya (remember baadalon ko kaat kaat kar...) or Chaai chaapa chaai in Hu tu tu, and not to talk about Maqbool, and of course my favorite 'Macchis'.

Music of Omkara is not the kind which gives instant kick but is kind of that grows on you after every another hearing; and after watching movie reaches a different level altogether.
Each one of them is a gem, and reinforces the belief that after RD only Vishal can do justice with Gulzar's wizardary.

--- After a long time I liked Konkana's performance, otherwise to me she looks n acts same in her all movies.
--- Saif was good but his voice refused to match with the character at times.
--- And most natural performer was Bipasha, she was playing herself ;-)

Everything about it is good: - plot, acting, music, direction etc but unfortunately movie is not going to do as good at box office as it deserves to.

I'm sure everyone will like it and I'm also sure coz' of liberal dose of swearing and profanities will not go again to watch it with 'family' :-)

Mercury is scaling new heights, and kept us indoor for the weekend, we could only go out on Saturday night to catch 10:40pm 'Superman Returns' show at a nearby IMAX theatre; it was my first movie at any IMAX. And ard 20-25 mins of 3D effects were enough to make me smile :-)

Though not a great movie but it had its moments....... like when Superman saves the crashing plane and places it in a baseball stadium :-) ;
Should not be missed if you liked superman comics once!!

I'm not much for Matrix or LOTRs type movies but definitely 've a soft corner for 'Spiderman' and 'Superman' kinda comics flicks. :-)

Completed 8 months in alien land..., initially I used to call home daily, and sometimes twice a day, then started calling every alternate day, and gradually brought it down to twice a week!!!
And I just realized in past 2 weeks I called home just two times!!
Each n every time conversation is same, Dad asks about work, Mom inquires about health, and I talk about weather here!!!
Yes, weather has been changing...from foggy winters to insane rains to now fierce summers, but still.......hmmm.....nothing has changed, nothing will ever change!!!

hmm..Depp or watever ...now its official 'Pirates of the Caribbean 2' has created a record for best opening week by earning ard $55 million!
And also I found it UTTER CRAP!!
Keira looks like a boy and Depp acts like both 'boy-girl' combo!
They just cashed on the success of Part-1 and fooled people to watch Part-2 which is nothing but a 'set-up' for Part-3.

WC'06 ended on a high note for me as my favourites in the end got what they deserved, and showed that cup can be won without any superstars and also showcased the power of defensive tactics. Though sad part was Zidane's bizzare act, no matter what was said to him, it was plain stoooopid on his part to end his career like that!!!

'Million Dollar Baby', another remarkable movie, that casted some sort of spell on me, it happened after long time, last time Shawshank Redemption did more than that!!

whoaa..world cup is in full swing...is seriously interesting n aggressive this time!!

World cup never fails to bring back memories..and hell lot of them....it all started with 'Mexico-86' WC, and the semfinal between Argentina n England was one of the my earliest memories of the game.

Surprisingly, Germany the most boring team is playing good aggressive brand of soccer....hmm..now Brazil is out of it, I support Italy like the way I did in Italia 90' though that time Baggio broke the heart.....thats another story.

Money does something to people, I always knew this but here daily I see this reality in its stark naked sense!!
There is nothing called 'bondings' or 'friendship', rather its all about using people, and making false pride and bank balance swell!

Noisy, be it watering plants or cleaning the streets with huge vaccum cleaners or manicuring the shrubs...all these machines have one thing in common they make a hell lot of noise, good enough to scare away the sleep for couple of days... disappointments in US..as wifey calls them!

Ahh..week that was.....Each day was as eventful as it can be.

Everything happened, celebrating my b'day, buying our car, working 12 hrs at a stretch on more than two days, renewing driving license, registeration n insurance work, watching Fanaa, Phir Hera Pheri, Chup Chup ke......

Fanaa = 'Fun' ja
Phir Hera Pheri = anything except Hera Pheri
Chup Chup Ke = It was like a TV serial, best part was Dumb Kareena Kapoor.

For past 3 days we are listening to title song of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna....it sounds like mis-mash of title song of 'Kabhi khushi kabhi gham' + 'Kal Ho Na Ho' with base beat of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'.

Well, even after reading this and this, weekend was spent watching Da Vinci Code at nearby multiplex.
Different people have different views abt it, some say Tom Hanks looked totally bored or disinterested or director tried to show too many things in 149 minutes or the movie makes sense only for those who have read the novel.
To me, only thing that made sense was Audrey Tautou.
